Final Reflection

Final Reflection

This semester I have gained more from this class then I could have ever expected. In addition to learning about Animal Behavior across so many different species I also learned how to do several things that I can take away from this course and apply to my life after graduation. Statistics is a massive part of biological study. In past courses, I have learned how to do statistical analysis such as a simple T-test, but it was never with data I collected or even data that I understood. In this course not only did I get to collect my own data, but I got to decide what statistical analysis I would perform and then manipulate the data that I collected. This gave me a new found appreciation for statistics and how it can help to interpret data. I also learned how to write a proper research proposal. This skill is one that I wish was taught in earlier courses. Most individuals who major in biology will go off to work in a research lab and will need to write proposals to get funded. This skill can be applied to both my biology and my chemistry major which is a huge deal for me. This semester I ended up doing research for and writing two whole proposals. Losing the specimens for my first proposal was a huge hill that I honestly didn’t think I was going to get over, but I did and I can give credit to the skills learned through this course. Finally, I learned how to take the proposal that I wrote and condense it to fit on a poster that I then needed to present to other science and non-science majors. Presenting in front of people is something that I struggle slightly with but this course helped me to get over some of those fears. Presenting on a topic that I found interesting definitely helped that nervousness. The structure of this course allows me to learn at my own pace and retain information that I enjoy. Not only does this motivate me to work harder and put more effort into my work, but I find that I take more pride in what I do when I get to decide and research something that I am interested in. I said this last semester in Tropical Marine Biology and it carries into this semester as well, I have learned more in this one semester than I have almost my entire college career.
